They collected both Kickstarter and pre-orders, sat on the money for years, then finally decided that their product just does not work inside a residential home, hence the commercial pivot.
This version is even worse because it does not support any existing ecosystem (Steam, meta oculus), so on the odd chance they unlearn what they knew 8 years ago and ship, all games will be coming directly from them, likely via peloton-like subscription service (not speculation, directly from their investor pitch deck)
This comment is only partially correct, but as usual, mostly false. Yes, they released a product in 2014 that was successful, just not in the way they expected it to be. At the time, standalone fully-wireless self-contained VR goggles didn't exist. The original setup required extensive wiring, cabling and a powerful computer, fast HDD, & powerful graphics card. So basically, perfect for large, professional, well equipped managed gaming centers (like Dave & Busters) but less than ideal for average mom & pop home users. So, pivot to Omni-Arena they did and successfully so. They are almost "ruggedized" 100 Omni Arenas installed now, with many repeat institutional customers who keep reordering more. There are backlogged with their Arena installations.
Enter 2023, 2024 and now, unlike 10 years ago, standalone fully wireless self-contained VR consoles that effectively come with the Graphics card, Processor, Hard Drive and all RAM all included are now widely available. So, the time is now perfectly right for a "Retail" version.
And i've played their native and other 3rd party games & they're AWESOME
