Here's a TRUE vision, though. Heck, Sony, Take 2, etc. is on record praising the PS unit price increase and the beginning of $70+ title's increases.

Sorry, but I'm not so credulous to white-collars' nonsense without having, in public view, the FACTUAL data.

What a scam!  I have never purchased this product for more than $99 including shipping and tax.  I last purchased a pair of these in early 2020 from Amazon.  Technology prices should fall (deflate) due to continuing improvements.  Unfortunately, it seems that nobody is innovating in the 2.5" form factor for HDDs which is causing prices to no longer drop.  This is unfortunate because I am running on fumes with regards to backup space left, yet I refuse to EVER purchase a hard drive for more than I have in the past, especially 2+ years in the past.  I have had a price watch on this drive for several months now and the only time it hit my price was in the middle of the night and it had already gone back up by the time I woke up.  (There really should be a "go ahead and buy when it hits this price" option!) In any case, capacities in this form factor seem stuck at 5TB while the 3.5" form factor is up to at least 22TB and a better cost per TB. But the larger 3.5" drives are rather loud and not suitable for the location my computer is at.

I recall purchasing an old WD Ultra - ~Black Friday, you know, when BF deals were ACTUALLY GREAT DEALS and not these everyday BF BS deals - Like for ~$110. MANY years ago. So, unless these clowns has jacked back up the price over the years (just tragic) for these very dated relic mediums, someone  at WD needs a reality check or timeout.
