Why couldn't they just leave the 'i' on mobile processors and without the 'i' on desktop processors so that they can be easily distinguished? Core i3/i5/i7/i9 on mobile processors, Core 3/5/7/9 on desktop processors.

Intel and AMD just reported big losses in the first quarter of 2023 for consumers products espesially. They stopped doing what people need. And prices do not match performance growth.

AMD's naming isn't pure randomness. The desktop CPU naming is easy enough to understand given several generations of the same 4-16 core counts in a row, and the mobile naming is based on a secret decoder ring, not random at all.

Intel's naming is worse as usual, but it doesn't matter. You'll either figure it out by looking at a table of all the processors, or you're an ordinary non-techie shopper getting confused and fooled by all the numberz.

As bad as that naming sounds, it is welcome news for a year or 2. Kind of annoying when looking at laptops and they just advertise them as "i7" with no model number or generation, then you find out it is 3 years old.
