The shame of the laptop is that despite the presence of 28 pci-e 5.0 lanes in Zen4 7x45 (56 pci-e 4.0 or 112 pci-e 3.0 lanes), Asus gobbled up and did not solder a single USB40 port, despite the fact that it easily holds at least 10 same ports - the lines are free in bulk! Even the usb-c ports in the back are shameful 10Gbps instead of 20!

As a reminder, TB5 requires 2 pci-e 5.0 lanes, so if Asus had the wit, they could put 4 USB40 ports to get full pci-e 3.0 x16 on eGPU risers with link aggregation. AMD just thought about this and did it (unlike Intel), but everything turned out to be in vain - greedy manufacturers do not put 2-4 USB40 ports in their laptops with 7945HX to fully support TB5+/USB40 2.0!

Obvious shortcomings - indicators directly under the screen - shone vilely in the dark - it is necessary to seal it with electrical tape immediately. As well as the power button, which are not turned off (or could be by a key combination). The F1..F12 buttons are idiotically not highlighted (but the additional functions are highlighted). And narrowed in height as always. The numpad buttons are narrower in width, although there is enough space!

There are no ports on the right - and a mouse radio transmitter is usually inserted there so that the signal is better next to it for right-handers. You have to stick it on the left, and this is good only for left-handers.

We go further, despite the fact that it has 28 5.0 links and this is a 2023 model on the pre-top AMD process - 2.5Gbps RJ45, although with such power and so many lines, they could have delivered 5-10Gbps to fast access the home/office NAS over cable.

Autonomy is also a weak point - why such a large consumption at rest? However, no one will carry it further than the house in most cases. So this topic can be scored.

The screen, not only is 2.5K (and we need 4k@120Hz+) - under two key reviews it has an extremely shitty contrast by modern standards - about 1000:1 (+/- 100:1), while from a laptop with at such a price in 2023, at least 1500: 1 is expected, and preferably 2000: 1 with a matrix from LG. And of course, 16:9 is only suitable for games and movies (and for movies, 1500:1+ is mandatory, otherwise instead of black it's completely gray). For work, surfing and even YouTube, 16:10 is much more convenient.

Noise - it is elevated even at idle. There is no manual control of the coolers (and this is now almost a standard for this level). Legions, for example, already have it in 2023 (before that there was a separate third-party utility), MSI has had it for a long time. Throttle whine at idle. But this is a random sample. But noted.

Of the good noted the sound on the speakers. But this is traditional for Asus. This is his trademark. BUT, the case is half empty - the battery could be much larger (of course, this would affect the weight) or they could still improve the sound and put 4 more speakers in front - there is plenty of space, since they didn't put a big battery. Or 4 M.2 SSD for make RAID10 with SSD.

Coolers could have been made much larger in diameter - which would have affected greater silence.

As a result, some stupid model turned out. It seems to be with a claim to be universal, but with a bunch of shortcomings. And as a gaming one, it is ridiculous with a poor 4070, which does not draw new games in 2.5k, and games in fhd will automatically lead to a muddy picture, because. only 4k panels provide a sharp picture in fhd.

Has the whole world of laptop designers gone crazy? They do not understand what is needed from a universal or gaming laptop?

Quote8 GB VRAM

As Hardware Unboxed (and others) recently have shown: 8 GB VRAM is not enough for new/already released games, even if you set the textures to medium and only at 1080p! This is planned obsolescence by NVIDIA/GREEDIA (and AMD's RX 7600M XT, RX 7600M, RX 7700S and RX 7600S, all already officially announced, only have 8GB of VRAM).
Don't buy these low-end gaming notebooks, buy only starting with 12GB of VRAM, even if they are going to be more expensive obviously.

12GB VRAM is the new 8GB VRAM and 8GB VRAM is the new 4GB.

Looks like a review issue with Nvidia Advanced Optimus and getting power settings correctly. Hard to believe that nearly identical Intel model got 9.7h while Ryzen got 4h.

Only for Dragon Range (7_45HX) parts cause they are basically repackaged desktop chiplet CPUs and that arctitecture incurs some heavy idle / low load inefficiencies. 7X40H (HS) are going to be monolithic and therefore will be fast and frugal. More efficient than intel 13th gen I'd wager a guess. But they'll top out at 8 cores max - so about half of the MT performance of this 7945HX. Down the stack everything else is monolithic and efficient too.

@Dorby:

I think that's just the majority of 240 Hz panels in general. Pushing that high frame rates affects battery life so they probably choose to lower the nits to compensate. If looking for brighter 500+ nit panel, might be better to look at the lower refresh rate 165 Hz panels instead or mini-LED even.

@tedm:

This is AMD's HX series chip, it isn't designed for battery life but to be used in desktop replacements instead. Look at HS/U series, whenever the Ryzen 7000 parts for those are released if interested in battery life.

Disappointing screen for the price, we are in 2023 not 2021 expected to have more brightness. Coil whine not acceptable. 4070 mostly disappoints compared being much nearer 4060 than halfway to 4080 but that is Nvidia issue . Good looking laptop without the worst of flashy ROG. Numpad present.
I hope you can choose other CPU's...

This Strix G17 review is really making the Strix G18 look like a decent choice

What is up with $2000+ laptops having displays <500 nit of brightness in 2023?

What is the point of fancy 240Hz refresh if I cannot comfortably watch an episode of tv that has average 20-50 nit scenes that are barely visible on a 300 nit display.

The ROG Strix G17 with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX and RTX 4070 is well equipped for current and future games with similarly current and powerful hardware. Together with RGB illumination all around and a 240-Hertz IPS display, it leaves hardly any gaming desires unfulfilled. On the other hand, our test reveals not only some expected weaknesses.
