The problem for manufacturers is that in 2023 no one needs a 1TB SSD, everyone wants cheap 2-4TB to install in laptops. Therefore, 1TB of garbage is drained at a discount. And no one remembers about 256-512 for a long time, so they are forcibly sold to clients in all sorts of junk laptops.

In regards to soldiered on devices like ram and storage.. that's why it always pays to research devices before buying them. On the other hand if your comfortable with limiting yourself to what the manufacturer gives you permanently, by all means. Moral of the story.. research, research.
