These are perhaps the rejected / lower binned units from 1080 production (?).  Not all chips come out perfectly.  Rather than discard the whole you just disable some faulty cores and create a separate class of chip.

Intel used to do this. Also helps premium segment feel like they're getting substantially more for the extra money.

So rather than reusing their own Exynos 1080 that was released a year earlier for sub-premium flagships, Samsung decided to recreate an inferior version with half as many high performance A78 cores and half as many GPU cores, and stick that into their new Galaxy A53 5G. I'm looking forward to reviews about the difficulty for this underpowered chip to drive the 120Hz display in games.

Samsung recently debuted the Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53, with both devices being powered by its new Exynos 1280 mid-range chipset. The Exynos 1280 has now been put through both CPU and GPU tests in an attempt to gauge how it compares to what would be its closest rival—the Snapdragon 695 powering the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and Poco X4 Pro.
