I have this unit with the 3TB of gen 4 SSD. 32GB 4k 3080. it's lightning fast yes! BUT the heat is unbearable. I basically put it 12 inches away from the aircon and it still manages to reach 86deg Celcius! if i don't then it crashes and turns off. BTW this is the third replacement of asus of the same unit. First issue was the keys were crooked, second was Display flickering.

I don't understand. If this laptop is bad why Notebookcheck rates as highest level 90%?

I need some help about RTX 3060 version. Coil whine, screen issues. Is it real or just complaint from some users?

Which has better bass, the new Dell XPS or Asus Zephyrus S17?
I'm especially interested in low bass, under 200Hz.

My current MSI GT72 has ok bass, but could be better, since the subwoofer is fed the same full-range sounds as the tweeters.  ::)

(Ps. This article's graphs/stats aren't loading for me atm, so I can't check the pink noise stats and compare them to XPS's stats...)

Especially given the type of cooling design and the flagship CPU, this model should have been directly compared to the Zephyrus Duo 15 or Duo 15 SE. If you search 'Duo' or '5900hx' and add the Duo 15 SE to the charts, this new 17in model does not look real great in many tests. And when you're talking close to $3000usd or more in the American market, you also need to look for extras. You cannot just say it's got a fast chip and that should be enough.

I own a Duo 15 SE. I sadly couldn't get the 4K model that is rarer than iridium it seems, but the FHD 300 panel and a 3080 are now available if you watch closely. If you actually use it in a battery friendly configuration it can give over 6-7 hours with BOTH screens on, or 7-10 hours with only the main screen on. (Silent mode, panel 60fps, iGPU locked)

Plainly the S17 at 1440p gives more workspace than the Duo 15 SE, but it loses the half-height secondary screen which supports multitouch and pen input....especially against the 4K/120 model the S17 is not a great workstation for the price. When plugged in the CPU beats the 5900hx in single core and loses in multicore, that's a wash. I'm not 100% certain but I think you lose more performance on battery with the S17 than you do with the Duo 15 SE, that is reflected in the actually good battery life under load.....however the Duo 15 can run on 100W PD fairly well, which means you can run it off a 12V vehicle plug with appropriate adapter. You can also run it on a large high end usb-c battery pack.

Ah yes, 17" nearly 3 kg with one channel soldered.
Yeah one can upgrade the other channel, but asymmetrical dual channel comes with performance cost when ram usage is high, the main reason one want to upgrade ram in the first place.

And the horrible brightness and brightness distribution.

Consumer electronics looks pessimistic at best.

Asus advertises a weight of 5.73 lbs for the laptop but notebookcheck has the weight at 6.1 lbs. Asus advertises the same weight for every spec and regardless of screen choice. Obviously not a huge deal breaker and probably hard to notice, it just seems weird.

PC mag lists the lower figure but it's unclear whether they weighed the laptop themselves or just repeated the figure Asus gave them.

I wonder what explains this discrepancy?

It's a shame the screen is less than 300 nits , overall a great laptop but would not buy personally just for that.

This laptop would cost over $3000 yet it has major compromise like slow Wifi/BT card

Laptops have little space to adequately cool powerful hardware. Asus probably wondered, "why don't we just open the case and let the hardware get a direct supply of fresh air?" No sooner said than done, but does this actually work? Does it deliver the promised advantages in terms of noise and temperature, and is it stable enough at the same time? We put this to the test.
