has battery life improved over time with updates?

Certainly depends on what you ask of it.
I'll preface this by saying I was more than mortified when I tried to run any type of program that wasn't an app or through a browser. Pretty sad that with edge and outlook open simultaneously trying to open Excel seems to be asking way too much. Replace Excel with a PDF program (take your pick) and you will feel like you got lucky if you can unfreeze it in under 30 seconds.........
Effectively a glorified Chromebook best I can tell but with mobile data sim and pen and touch input that is decent enough. Keyboard is the only thing that shines for me. The charging setup is quite disturbing to me after considering someone came up with a connection point that's half the size of the opening and contact is maintained via the weakest magnetic pull you can imagine. Very rarely can I get charging without having to fiddle with the placement and it has gotten progressively worse.
All this said I'm an electrical contractor and the combination of stand alone data, pen input and ultra light machine with detachable keyboard makes it viable. The real win is that when I break it I won't be upset.
I bought a Samsung Tab 8 Ultra and literally have to force myself to use the surface when not on a jobsite and truthfully the only reason I don't use the Samsung is the size is just a little much to handle while walking around. In a pinch if I need 2 screens while away from home I will use the surface and utilize the Samsung as a 2nd screen but other then that I will use Samsungs weird DEX fake desktop mode with a 2nd monitor at home over the surface. Everything is better on the Samsung except no data sim (Samsung phone tethers well enough), the weight and the keyboard (no idea how Samsung managed to make such a awful keyboard but I opt to swipe on tablet mode often.
So long as you don't ask more than you would from your phone the surface pro x is dynamite. Microsoft Teams startup puts it to its limit every time.
Wireless keyboard and crappie iPad would run circles around it I'm guessing

I usually like Microsoft products, but I am very disappointed with the Surface Pro X.  I was out of the US for a month after I bought it and passed the return date, other wise I would have brought it back.  I cannot install any useful software on the damn thing!  !

Sooo.... what browser did you use for your battery test?  Edge (arm64), chrome (x86), or something else?  arm64 vs x86 emulated makes a big difference on battery life. 

Funnily enough, I actually like my surface pro x, but I only used it as an edgebook; edge arm64 browser 90% of the time.  And I definitely would NOT recommend anyone to buy one; too limiting and odd for the price.

Wish iPads would start emulating x86, that's the push Microsoft needs to fix Windows 10 Tablet UI and ARM Surface.

True, and true. Yet if you bother to read other review of the same product using SQ2, there isn't much left to be desired. Comparing this to Apple M1 is certainly wrong, nevertheless, Microsoft hasn't offered new product yet besides Surface Pro X with SQ2 - so this is almost closest they can compare to M1 from Microsoft side. And the main problems aren't just the hardware -- the software itself also brings major drawback. Windows 10 itself has an arm64 version, but without any killer software runs in it, it's pretty much dead in the water.
It has been more than 10 years since arm gained popularity with Android has been around, yet Microsoft almost didn't put effort to prepare Windows along with its killer apps to arm.
