This is a bit of a dramatic take, you don't need Freesync AND VRR, just one or the other, and Sony have already said (in their official FAQ) that they are working on VRR support.
Eh, Sony's choice to support VRR but apparently not Freesync is still baffling (and I say this as someone who's a stuck with PlayStation since the beginning, and continue to do so by already having a PS5).
Because unlike Nvidia's GSync, AMD allows their Freesync technology to be licensed for FREE, so there shouldn't be any real cost to them here beyond paying their own people to implement it software-wise, which is negligible on a per-unit basis. And while it's true don't really need Freesync if you have VRR, the latter only works with HDMI which is brand new and almost nobody has a TV that supports it yet. Freesync, on the other hand, is MUCH more widely supported by TVs that people already own.
My 2018 mid-tier Samsung TV supports it, for example, and I'm not about to buy a new TV already just to get a TV that supports the feature, especially when it literally already does support a pre-existing, royalty-free, and more widely available implementation of the exact same function. Missing out on the feature completely with the PS5 just because Sony didn't feel like implementing it would be extremely disappointing.
