Wanted to add,

The next PC I build will have the fastest possible SSD.  I'm thinking this time next year will be an interesting upgrade period.  New/matured process, new PCI tech impacting drives, and probably moving to DDR5 CPU, GDDR6X GPU.

Exciting times.

It remains to be seen whether this will make a serious difference compared to the xbox, but it does seem like pop-in is a thing of the past.  Also, it may provide a definitive FPS improvement as you can load assets into the GPU memory on the fly.  This means, like others have said, higher quality textures, or lower quality textures but with more on screen.  So, there will be a tangible difference with the new consoles having an SSD.

PC players have already made the jump, but now all games will be designed with this in mind.  I think only exclusives will benefit from Sony's approach, and it's hard to say if by much.

That's all fine and good but ps still second rate tech. They don't make anything themselves just use what others have already made. Yes PlayStation has some good games but loading a game from an SSD can be done without the SSD being in the console however SSD can only do so much if the GPU and graphics card are junk the SSD is meaningless. Literally only game worth anything on PlayStation is god of war if the game was made for Xbox, PlayStation would of died long ago!!!!
What exactly does Microsoft produce themselves? Anyway it looks like the market doesn't agree with your opinion, Sony has outsold its direct competitor's console 4 generations in a row.

So what your actually saying, is that this is about how fast the Xbox Series X is going to load, since the SSD used was an off-the-shelf SSD like the XSX around 2-3GB/s?

So the difference in load times will be 0.8 vs 0.2 seconds.
Once your under a second, it really don't matter no more. Good job trying to save face Sony fans. But you faileddd.

What's 12-channel?
You don't mean x12 PCIE 4.0 lanes, do you?
For that matter, the Samsung 970 series uses 4-PCIE 3.0 lanes.
It doesn't nothing for rendering frames since that's the GPU's job.

textures and other assets are loaded from disk so a super fast disk could mean amongst other things, better asset quality and quicker rendering of the complete scene . a mighty fast disk could be kind of interesting. not totally convinced that it it's a better idea to spend the money than a better graphics card. but sony have some high quality game studios so I hope they where consulted before making that decision. anyway consoles are all about the games and the experience and less about graphics, if you want the best graphics just buy a pc

Lol at everyone talking about the winning the "power race" you guys have a short memory span. The 360 was the "better overall console" but did it have games like god of war, uncharted or the last of us? Were your  games even as good looking? No? So f*** off.

As I understand it, on most SSD's there's a small ARM soc (the ssd controller) that sits between the pcie lanes and the actual storage NAND chips. It handles keeping track of the data, error correction, caching, actually handling the data in flight, etc. It has channels between in and the NAND storage chips. More channels, more concurrent data can flow between the controller and storage chips. Eventually you could have enough channels and NAND chips that the slowest link in the chain could be the pcie bandwidth.

Hopefully this timely tidbit of information will shut up the one dimensional folks (aka Xbox fanboys) who think that teraflops are the be all, end all (12 > 10) spec that counts.

Sad you ponies use a site like notebook chat to champion your "next-gen" console. You lost the power race yet again and are trying to claim that a faster sad is going to make up for it. Hold that L close.

But games haven't been designed to stream data until now tho right? All games today are compatible for low speed hdd's,Which  would explain why pc ssd's have been relegated to a simple storage upgrade.

I've built and tested well over 100k worth of PC hardware over many many PC builds with different hardware. To say that your SSD is faster then another SSD when it comes to game load times is simply a gimmick. ALL SSD are super fast and the differences between loading times in games between what is considered normal SSD 550mb/s and a advertised as "Super Fast" SSD usually 2500mb/s is never more then a full second. If your transferring large files from a local server to your desktop yeah it makes a huge difference. But there is hardly a noticeable difference at all for game loading times. Once you go with a SSD for gaming all your loading times will be about the same. The only real difference in game load times was between HDD and SDD.

An observant Reddit user has offered up a timely reminder about the speed of the upcoming PlayStation 5's SSD. In a demo from last year, a PS5 devkit thrashed a PS4 Pro in a loading and rendering comparison using Marvel's Spider-Man as the test game. However, it seems many have forgotten that this PS4 Pro-whupping devkit was actually a "low-speed" variant.
