They don't do mid-cycle refreshes? What about: -

The original NES and Famicom both had revisions adding AV support.

They releases both a Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Light revision to their handheld range.

They released 4 different versions of the GBA. The OG GBA, GBA SP, Game Boy Micro and GBA SP 101.

They also released the DS lite mid-cycle.

The released a Wii Mini if my memory serves me right also aswell as a revision without GameCube suport

Theres been numerous revisions of the 3DS/2DS family.

Also, technically they have already released a revision of the Switch with an improved CPU and battery life and a smaller revision with the Switch Lite.

"Nintendo typically does not release more powerful mid-generation consoles, either."

Uhm..... Wut? They, or was it Sega(?), practically invented the practice. GBC was a "mid-gen" upgrade over the GB, DSi was one over the DS, and the NEW 3DS over the 3DS. Yes, those 3 examples are handhelds, but the Switch is a handheld. It's a handheld ADVERTISED as a "hybrid console" to those who are too technologically impaired to know about the concept of TV-OUT. Nintendo is just continuing to do what they've always done, nothing more.

Would like to point out that N64DD was an add on not a mid cycle refresh.

Quotedisavows the typically unreliable Digitimes

Wow, calling another publisher "tyically unreliable". Can you prove that they are "typically" unreliable? Define typically. Now apply that definition to every single article that Digitimes has ever published. Now analyse the results. Yes, how time consuming. Imaging having to pay someone to do it for you. Now, can you prove on the balance of probabilites that, given your definintion of "typically unreliable", and the thousands of articles you've just read through, that there is truth in your statement?

Because that's the defence you'd need in court if Digitimes hit you with a defamation charge you careless writer. And before you say it was just your opinion... well, same story there. Can you and all the money you have invested in your lawyer prove that this is an opinion? To me it seems like an assertion of fact, and I'm sure the plaintiff would have no problem convincing the court after you run out of money.

Below are just a few of the reams of examples of Digitimes' leaks being "typically unreliable", or its reputation for publishing leaks being thought of as such.

It wasn't being pedantic. I agree with the commenter. You clearly missed the fact that Nintendo had recently refreshed their consoles. Don't be salty.

Comparing the Switch to only home consoles basically misses the entire point of its existence. It is meant to be both a handheld and a console and equally good at either role.  So with the handheld half of its lineage, not only was the "new" 3DS fairly recent, but significant enough to warrant some exclusive games that didn't run on the original model.  So there is definitely precedent here.  Also, Nintendo's handhelds have been their money makers for years, so it makes sense that they would want to utilize all the tools they used for those markets (including more powerful refresh models to boost sales) with the Switch.

"Moreover, the custom Volta GPU will not support 4K gaming or any significant performance improvements over the Tegra X1 and Tegra X1+ found in the Switch and Switch Lite."

What's the point of the upgrade then? Surely Volta will bring significant improvements over the current Maxwell based design.

"The 64DD peripheral for the N64 is probably the closest example of a more powerful mid-cycle refresh in the last twenty years or so, but Nintendo discontinued it less than a year after its release."

Ummm, I suppose you've never heard to the NEW Nintendo 3DS. Also, the DSi also had more horsepower than the original DS. You probably shouldn't be writing articles about tech you clearly know nothing about.

I have, on both counts.

Would "home console" satisfy your pedantry?

Who wants to break the bad news to him that the Switch is a handheld?

Whatever Nintendo decides, I will be there to support them.

Rumour has it that Nintendo and NVIDIA are working to bring a Volta-powered Switch to market, and possibly as a Pro SKU of the console. It may not arrive before the end of the year though, and it may not live up to expectations anyway.
