I have got this laptop for work and all small issues disappeared after the drivers update. The laptop is quiet, fast and working without any problems with the docking station. I have got it with 2 FHD monitors + FHD laptop screen and using for solidworks, FEA, programming and occasional gaming. At the moment half the company is using this model and I do not hear any complaints.
I work a lot with Premiere and Resolve and I'm in need to update my macbook Pro, but I can't device between the dell 5510, the XPS 15 or the zbook G3 Studio (which has double the vram, very important for resolve and two TB3 ports). But the HP looks kinda plasticy versus the Dell and not as well built...
I hate that there aren't HP/Dell Stores to get a feel of the laptops! I also wan't something that feels as premium as my macbook (but performance is a bit more important).
What is your opinion on this? Can you push me towards one or the other?
Keyboard and screen tilt are deal-breakers for an otherwise great laptop!
I recently bought this Dell Precision laptop after using an HP ProBook for many years. Although the performance is excellent, there are 2 aspects of this laptop that make me wish I had never bought it. They are constant irritations and therefore make them deal-breakers for me: 1) The keyboard is really awful. The low 1.3mm travel causes me to constantly make typing errors even though I have had the machine now for over 3 months. The "minimalist" nature of the keyboard is a tactful misnomer for a really stupid use of the expansive real estate of the laptop. It's a 15″ laptop ... why on earth did Dell decide to waste this space by placing such a tiny keyboard, with commonly used functions relegated to Ctrl and Fn secondary use (e.g. PgUp, PgDn)? I still have not got used to the cramped keys compared to my old 14″ HP laptop which had a much larger keyboard for a much smaller laptop. 2) Secondly, the limited tilt angle of the screen is a CONSTANT irritation when I am using the laptop on my lap. All my old laptops (Dell and HP) tilted almost to 180 degrees. This Dell just does not go far enough (far less than 135 deg) and as a result I am constantly having to tilt the whole laptop to be able to see the screen comfortably. This makes for an uncomfortable experience while lying an bed and scrolling through news channels at the end of a tiring day. Sometimes I feel like chucking the whole thing in the ocean it is so frustrating.
There seems to be quite a few issues with this model, it needs the this Samsung driver for the m.2 ssd http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/downloads/software/Samsung_NVMExpress_Driver_rev11.zip
as it uses the OEM version of the EVO 950 (951).
As I did a clean install of windows 10 anniversary edition and the update of the drivers failed miserably as the first thing you need to do is get the right ssd driver and then do updates. I also found it was better to get the Intel driver pack direct from Intel.
--------------- In general, the system does not calculate faster than 1.6 GHz in battery mode. This state does not change even when connecting to the power supply, making it necessary to reboot the laptop. A BIOS update, like the one available for the XPS 15, might improve this. ---------------
Does anyone know if this has, in fact, been fixed in a BIOS update or otherwise? This machine suits my needs but this seems really horrible.
Nice spec sheet - I bought one - top specs (XEON, 16GB, 512G nVMe) - worst error of my computer-life :( Multiple bluescreens, fan proiblems etc) -and to add to it, in spite of paying the prosupport from dell $300+ - Dell is giving me a hard time and refuse to refund me - see my latest email below:
Dear team @Dell.
I AGAIN just wasted an hour on the phone, talking to four or five different departments which passed the call to each other repeatedly.
I ordered a top-specs computer which I received on July 5th. The computer quickly revealed full of faults. On July 20th, after having wasted multiple hours of work time trying to fix the faults following the advice of the support team (for which I have paid a hefty premium!), I decided to return it for repairs. It was sent back on the 23rd and received by Dell on the 25th. On the 30th, I returned from a short trip and discovered that the PC has been returned to me – left OUTSIDE by the courier company for several hours ??? days ?? After starting up the PC, in spite of multiple repair operations (Main board? Hard drive? Fan-heatsink?) the system is still demonstrating the same issues. On the 2nd of August I requested a refund by email.
Since then, the only communications I receive from Dell are 24hrs-delayed replies (often even slower) trying to make me believe than I am not eligible for a refund as my request was after the 30days windows. The same message was hesitantly given to me on the phone today? Because the 30days warranty starts at INVOICE DATE?? This does not make any sense! Even when counting the invoice date – how come should my 30 days warranty be reduced by the MANY DAYS THE COMPUTER HAS BEEN IN YOUR POSSESSION FOR REPAIR??
This is completely unacceptable. I will escalate now this issue using all the means I can think of.
I built a $2600 version of this laptop with the very best of everything including a 500GB PCIe SSD drive. Bluescreens every hour after installing W10 Enterprise. Was told by Dell support that it is a Windows issue. Downloaded a new Windows ISO and rebuilt from scratch. 5 minutes after installing the last driver from the Dell site, blue screen. Dell refuses to own up to the problems with this machine so I sent it back. They provided no support to me at all, they just said that "Windows 10 Enterprise is not supported". BUYER BEWARE
I like lack of numeric keypad and centered touchpad, but no F1-F4, F5-F8, F9-F12 groups, small arrows keys, no dedicated Home/End/Pg Up/Pg Down keys, and lack of physical touchpad buttons, and no trackpoint makes this no go device to me, despite otherwise pretty impressive specs. :(
I really welcome the decision not to have numeric keypad. However, I don't like this large TouchPad. I prefer Precision 7510 to this one. But, Precision 7510 has a numeric keypad. This is sad. I need a machine with a combination of 5510's keyboard and 7510's touchpad.
I'm a bit disappointed when reading in parallel this review and your review of XPS 15 UHD. With a higher clocked CPU (200 Mhz in nominal and 400 Mhz in Turbo Boost) we have very different max load temperature: 45.8 vs 55.9 in the top center of the keyboard. Even top/bottom temperature distributions are different. Do you think we have two distinct cooling solution?
Have you found a solution for dirt ("tricky to remove")? The "soft-touch carbon surface" seems to be the same on both machines and you don't complain about cleaning difficulties.
'Relstively Highly Priced" I'd say unnecessarily overpriced notebook.
I could buy two GTX970 notebooks for probably less and not be any slower in most applications, and my productivity would probably be more influenced by how quickly my fingers typed and brain reasoned than anything this overpriced hardware offered.
