I purchased this computer (V3-771G) new in 2012.
It is now July 27, 2020.
This Acer has run faultlessly for me every since I bought it 8 years ago.

I replaced Windows with  Kubuntu, a Linux distro, as its sole OS since I bought it and am currently running Kubuntu 20.04 LTS with BTRFS as the filesystem. I've upgraded the RAM to 16GB and have replaced the main HD with a Samsung 860 EVO 500Gb SSD and put another of the same SSD into the second drive port.  I replaced the CDROM with an HD Caddy and put the spinner that had been sda as sdc, for storage of my BTRFS snapshots.   IF I turned off the POST I'd have a working desktop in less than 6 seconds, but with POST it takes about 30 seconds to display a working desktop.

I can tell that the thermal paste on the CPU is gradually loosing its efficiency.  My CPU temp at idle currently varies around 43C +- 5C.  It used to be about 5C lower.  Under load playing SpaceEngine-0.98 or other graphically intensive programs the CPU temp will climb to 85C+-5C.  I've never seen the CPU hit 100C.  The two SSD's idle around 25-30C.  One hit 53C once but they rarely  go above 45C.

I'm a Minecraft fan and run a Minecraft server on this box while also running a Minecraft client.  My grandsons log in to play when the server is up.  Or, they used to.  They've learned about girls.  LOL!

I'm 79.  Hopefully, this Acer will continue to run as long as I am cognizant enough to run it.   But, IF it dies before me I won't be replacing it.  My Android phone will have to fill my needs.

Is it possible to upgrade the graphic card on this laptop to an 680 etc?

No - i'm sure its not possible
the 650m is not a removable module - its not mxm-standart

and the heat of a 680m is much too extrem for this tiny cooling-system

This laptop has a horrible shiny plastic case.
I suggest Probooks if you want something cheap and in metal case for gaming.

Well, I bought the Acer Aspire V3-771G-9456 model, which is not their high end version of the 771G. I got it for a great price over at Newegg. The shipping box and packing materials looked great, but when I turn it on, DEAD ON ARRIVAL. Wow, I was steaming. I guess it is the motherboard, since the screen was still completely black, and the hard drive didn't even spin. The battery worked, and powered up fine.

Having a problem with a 3rd Toshiba 500GB Hard Drive. Returned two Toshiba Laptops since had (1) severe vibration and (2) Spinup Retries at 45%..now the same 45% with my two month's old Acer Aspire V3-771G. Rang Acer and gave them the figures. Previously rang Toshiba but no reply.  Is there a problem with Toshiba's 500GB Hard Disk Drives ?

I need to know... How did you get the mSATA working with the BIOS? I've tried booting from it, but BIOS from Acer don't support it.

Damn! the firewire port is missing! I'd like to continue to use our high end HDV cameras and it is not possible because we cant add it.

Wow! Thanks for posting this message. I get it now. I was on the search for an i7-3xxx Ultrabook with a boss-hog graphics card. I am now searching for an i7-3xxx with an HD 4000. Thanks. I'm liking the HP ENVY Spectre XT a lot now that I see it for what it is.

Yet another misunderstood design using Ivy Bridge.

Ivy Bridge is not supposed to give more processing speed, but to facilitate lighter, thinner, cooler, more silent notebooks. Instead we get old wine on new bottles, heavy, bulky, noisy, and low reliable notebooks having STILL dedicated graphics cards, extra fan, despite the HD4000 graphics card - to gain a silly 15% performance. One can ask, whats the point of releasing the Ivy Bridge processor ?

Goodbye Ethos. Acer uses the change to the new Intel Ivy Bridge processors as an opportunity for completely renaming single ranges. For example, the prior Ethos range will now be called Aspire V3. However, the alignment remains unchanged: we are dealing with the premium multimedia sector.
