Now I have tried twice to purchase a new battery for my iPad mini 4, which is 9 years and some 1 month old. However, it turns out that Apple lies. Apple does not sell any new battery for an iPad mini 4 any more. Apple's webpage for appointing a date for a replacement battery at an Apple shop or Apple partner shop and €135 price information is a lie. In particular, at Berlin's Apple shop on 2025-02-05, they have told me:

- iPad mini 4 is "vintage".
- Apple provides hardware service for 7 years (presumably since launch date).
- When the Apple webpage confirms, for an eligible product such as an iPad mini 4, a date for battery replacement, this only means that one gets actually available battery service in the Apple shop (or partner shop), that is, only in the shop the customer is then told that replacement batteries are actually not available and cannot be ordered, not even from the USA.
- Sending in the iPad to Apple would also be futile.

Hence, the price drop from €150 to €135 for a battery (or possibly device) replacement service is nothing but a PR lie. When the battery had still been available, the price was €150. After the battery has become unavailable, Apple advertises with a then allegedly lower price that is nothing but a fake. Even worse, it wastes the endconsumer's time and money spent for going to an Apple shop only to learn the truth there.

Apple never fails to disappoint more than expected. Or, as Apple would say: It just works!

Quote from: George on February 03, 2025, 06:00:09The reason is that the competition is worse.

Not in all but in some cases. During the past 15 years, I have tried very hard to avoid then replace my iPad but have always found the competition worse.

E.g., Apple temporarily asking €150 for a new battery was more than I could accept. They have dopped it to €135. Now that the old battery is dead, again I have considered a Surface Pro for Business but its later replacement battery would cost €240 to €500 - even much worse than the worst of Apple.

Phones have barely changed inlast 5 years, laptops have barely changed in a decade, ipads are still saddled with a trash OS, prices are extortionate. I'm not saying they make bad products, just the price to feature ratio is pathetic.

The reason is that the competition is worse. I used Android for >10 years, but recently jumped back to IOS because of Samsung's S22 bug and their decision to ignore it. I considered pixels but Tensor processors are just way behind in efficiency.

I recently also bought the first ever Macbook in my life. This is because my two recent Windows laptops, purchased in 2020 and 2023, are both heavily infested with software bugs. I must admit I also found bugs in my Macbook, but they are way less frequent and way less irritating.

Apple CEO Tim Cook now hails the company's last three months as "our best quarter ever", with global net sales of a record-breaking $124.3 billion. iPhones (somewhat unsurprisingly) accounted for nearly 56% of that revenue, while iPads contributed the least. Apple's earnings per share (EPS) also hit all-time highs for the quarter.
