This is a GOOD 1st step to getting more widely available alternate gaming operating systems in to the hands of more people. (and onto more devices!)

IMHO: the further the industry moves away from 'directx' and Microsoft the better.

However given that Microsoft currently owns a large percentage of the game developer companies, I can see them dragging their heals supporting other API's and platforms.

But in the end, the more different types of devices your software can run on, the more potential SALES and $$$ whatever you publish might make.

The mobile folks have proven time and time again that if your application can run on a large number of devices your collective pool of customers is that much larger. :)

The Lenovo Legion Go S will be the first third-party gaming handheld to ship with SteamOS. However, as Valve has just confirmed, the beta program for other third-party devices will be available before Lenovo's SteamOS-powered offering hits the shelves.
