The Ig Nobel was awarded to Japanese researchers demonstrating back end ventillation of animals with oxygen works to maintain blood oxygenation. Although seemingly unusual, other researchers demonstrated decades ago that mice could survive when submerged in oxygenated perfluorodecalin, so oxygenating animals by flooding the intenstines with this liquid is not unexpected.
