None of these changes seem to make sense.

Neither does the timing.

Maybe they do something like an Edge Epix?

It seems that Garmin is preparing to introduce a successor to the Edge 1040, two years after the device's release. According to multiple sources, the Garmin Edge 1050 will contain several notable upgrades, such as a higher resolution display and support for the Garmin Pay service, among other improvements.
