So, this is just like the TEDtalk, only, with a RasPi?

The students in the TEDtalk created their laser do-jobby from off the shelf/ salvaged parts to battle malaria in Africa.  They took apart an old laser printer for the laser.  Theirs was set up to kill female mosquitos.  There were no settings for squirrel/ cat/ mailman
