So...after years of price hikes they're now downspeccing for the same price.

ummm. No?
During the s1 to the s8 the exynos was superior overall.
Usually in efficiency cpu, and audio.
It was even superior in gpu for any 5 of those.
And even the mali g76 and especially the g77 are very strong. They were just not great implementations from samsung.

Not to mention... if you read any of this the point is it will be equal to if not better than the s875.
You're calling the 992 better than 875? I haven't heard enough to refute that but from where 990 stands and their decision to call it 992 instead of 998 or 999 I say that sounds highly unlikely.
Also I don't believe Exynos was superior back in S4 and S5, I had to put up with S4 on Exynos for a few months that lagged like hell at literally everything, total nightmare, nor S8 because that's the Exynos I used for 2 years until my phone bricked, then I swapped out the motherboard for an HK version's which carries SD, which I believe it's clearly better in terms of at least energy efficiency and graphics. It also has better compatibility with Gcam. I don't know about the earliest Exynos but counting from S4 on I don't believe they've been able to take the lead with the only exceptions of S6 and S7.

Samsung's 5 nm Exynos 1000 SoC may be limited to just the Galaxy S21 Ultra next year with the base Galaxy S21 set to feature the Exynos 992, according to a new leak. The company may avoid the Snapdragon 875 chips in order to save costs. The leak also suggests that Samsung may look into changing the "Exynos" branding as well.
