Worst article ever written its a tablet 6mm (ish) thick and can get 10hrs battery life.  As for other devices possibility samsung getting 20hrs if my experience of samsung is anything to go by you most likely have to crank power manager to the max to get anything like that.  Given its well known that ios and custom Soc are considerably more efficient than the competition even at higher clock speed and not counting the fact that to my knowledge the screen on the ipad pro wipes the floor with anything else out there in terms of brightness and colour accuracy you should be working under someone in future.

I sincerely apologise to everyone who has been offended by this article. It was completely wrong for me to suggest that Apple should make an attempt to improve the battery life on its iPad range by more than 0% over a 10 year period.
It's not wrong to ask for improvements. But calling it pathetic is an exaggeration. 10 hours should be perfectly usable. What matters is under what conditions. And this is especially true for Pro as you can expect it to be used for more demanding work. As we know from laptops, 10 hours can become less than 2. That's not funny.

The reality is that devices are a compromise. It seems pretty clear that 10 hours is adequate for them and has been the design target from the beginning. They apparently have higher priorities. And in a tablet, I can understand the weight obsession. I don't know when a tablet is light enough. But given that the big Pro is the heaviest of them, it probably has ways to go.

@Drew - Yes, you do sound like a fanboy, sorry. :) Nothing misleading about comparing the battery life of the new iPad Pro. For one, Apple itself is comparing the performance of the iPad Pro to laptops, inviting such a comparison. Secondly, when Apple launched the iPad it harped on about how wonderful 10 hours of battery life was compared to laptops at the time. That it still pushing out just 10 hours of battery life 10 years later is PATHETIC. No apologies.

@Ed - The first part of my headline is very positive about the new iPad Pro. I think it is a great device. The only thing that Apple really needs to do is improve its battery life so that is up to current standards and expectations. I think that is worth calling out. Otherwise, the danger in defending them is that you will continue to be stuck with 10 hours of battery life for the next 10 years as well. Who wants to charge every device they own every day, day after day? It also cuts into the useful lifespan of the battery as well. In reality, a few months after using it, the useful daily battery life will drop to 8 hours with current lithium ion tech.
I remember laptops that could have three batteries with official figures over 20 hours. And Apple's own laptops have been hovering around 10 hours in their own numbers. It's been like that for ages IIRC. Apparently, they consider 10 hours adequate and are too absorbed in making them thinner and lighter.

If it's actually 10 hours (as in practice), it seems alright. Appropriate for a typical work day or a day at school. In a laptop, I would take more (I'm not concerned with weight and thickness that much). In a tablet, since I would actually use it as a tablet and not a poor man's laptop, it's not that easy to say. Weight is really important in tablets as you have to count with holding them while using them.

If a cell degrades to 80 % within a few months of charging once a day, it must have been a piece of crap. 80 % is generally considered the end of life for a cell. It should take at least about 18 months. That's about 550 cycles, a pretty poor value. I believe Apple used to specify (some ten years ago) lifespan as 1000 cycles. That would be roughly 3 years of daily charging. And if you don't charge fully, it can be a lot more (Li-ions don't like being "fully" charged, especially in consumer electronics where limits are pushed). There are Li-ion cells capable of 7000+. They're just relatively big and heavy (for given capacity). That's why you're more likely to find them in an electric car than a laptop. Yes, it's definitely something you need to keep in mind.

@Anonymousdisgruntledreader (aka @Stupid Editorial) - Of course it will sell like hot cakes, despite offering 50 percent less battery life to its nearest (but distant) Android rival. After all, Apple has built its empire on selling products that don't compete on an equal footing in one way or another with its competition. At no point have I suggested it won't sell. Further, you have read into this article biases that just aren't there. I am a fan of the new iPad, but its battery life is no longer a selling point. It is simply adequate at best. Is that what you want from a device that starts at US$799 through to US$1649? Adequate? You want it to be great in every department, no? People pay enough for Apple products so what is wrong with pushing for improvements in all areas year-on-year?

"a potential liability"

Yeah, I'm sure the iPad will sell like s***, and Apple completely misunderstood their market, and Android's takeover of the tablet market is imminent.

"The only thing that Apple really needs to do is improve its battery life so that is up to current standards and expectations."

This sounds like the, now common, "OMG no Snapdragon 865, camera only has 64MP, inexcusable for $250!" and "Wow a 120MP camera, this is serious photography stuff! It will make Apple, Samsung, and Huawei s*** their pants! No, I haven't seen a picture taken with it, why?" drivel that is flooding mobile phone websites written by people who have no idea what they are talking about.

I hate to defend products, makes me feel like i'm some fanboy
however i have to point out this article is quite misleading to compare the ipad pro with the "competitors" listed. There are currently no real competitors considering the performance supremacy ipad pro offers in comparison to any other tablets on the market. It's like taking a lightweight gaming book such as the razor blade and blame it for it's battery life being shorter than ultrabooks with much less performance.

The ipad pro series have some flaws. For example the port selection leaves user struggling with dongles. The multitasking and input device is subpar from what laptop has to offer in terms of office work and could not hold up the company's ad to become "your next laptop". But the battery life is definitely not pathetic, it's just OK.

Sanjiv Sathiah - you failed to mention the battery is smaller and more efficient, 8 cores all around, increased RAM and better cameras... No, 10 hours of battery life doesn't bother me. I go to sleep at a reasonable hour every night...

Your article should have never passed thru the editor's desk. Totally subjective. I'm ok with 10 hours battery life, so at this point, your article is pointless. Please stick to technical analysis instead of personal subjective conclusions... Ed

Yes, this is a personal take, but it is backed up with objective comparisons. If you think a 0% improvement in battery life over a 10-year period is good enough, you must enjoy having to charge your devices more than I do.

"While this is a worthy goal..."

Thank you for using the modern "while" instead of joining the archaic "whilst" fad. :)

There is a lot to like about the new iPad Pro. Its new LiDAR scanner is certainly cutting-edge and its new Magic Keyboard accessory is everything Apple fans have been wanting. But its battery life continues to be stuck at 10 hours all these years after its launch.
