After 20 years since its 1998 release as Yahoo Pager, today's Yahoo Messenger — a Verizon property starting in 2017 — will be shut down in about five weeks. Although there is no official replacement for this iconic product, its successor might be Squirrel, a messaging app which is currently being tested by a few chosen ones.
