China’s push into AI is very dangerous, thinks George Soros

Notorious financier and philanthropist George Soros thinks that China's push in the AI field — which involves the plan to overtake the US by 2030 — is a severe threat to open societies. He also said that the social credit system "would give Xi Jinping total control over the people" if it became operational.

I'm curious as to how the CCP will use the technology, for example I don't think they've put everything they've got into the current Great Firewall, will they choose to hold back some implementation of machine learning too?

Notorious? Has someone read too much RT (ruskie trolls) fake news?
Notorious in various (many!) countries. I linked to an article about how he's considered in Eastern Europe in the article. Just check "George Soros scapegoat" in Google and you'll have a lot of rather interesting reading material. The dude is all right in my book, if you ask me about my personal opinion. The problem for people who have a lot of money and are trying to enlighten some dark nations is that they always end up depicted as the Devil himself. You have no idea, trust me. Eastern Europe is headed to dictatorship (Romania, Hungary) and every time those who have some sense left in them go out to protest, the governments and their supporters always play the "Soros paid them" card.

George doesn't like the competition.  He's also no saint.  The cheese is always free in the mouse trap.

And "enlighten dark nations?"  That's a very arrogant and elitist view.  Who's to say that his (or yours) is correct? I don't trust any person or organization that thinks that "they know best" and tries to force that on others.

Stick to reporting on tech, not politics. We didn't need the commentary on what you think about Soros.  It's completely irrelevant to the article.

That said, I agree that the program is very dangerous.

Soros certainly is the target of incompetent governments and anti-Semites, and he is right about China, but that doesn't change the fact that Soros still is a despicable human being.

Soros has a very bad reputation to cause the Asia financial storm, and what he said here is just a fake news originally from ROC DPP just to make a speech attack on China yet widely spreaded considering its hatred nature, and most importantly, the lack of the right to speak in the international community in mainland China. If you happen to know some Chinese then it'll be easy to know the truth using a Chinese search engine instead of google(I don't want to blame google because it just make much more fake news).

On the other hand, if you happen to work in IT industry, it's just so easy to know all major platforms have backdoor opend to the federal government, from Apple's file_reply process(Identifying back doors, attack points, and surveillance mechanisms in iOS devices, Jonathan Zdziarski) to Windows' background update monitor, Google will give all your search record to FBI if they need to(How do you think NSA can effectively being "NSA"?). This is the "open secret" in the industry but we choose to neglect. It's just so damm ridiculous to laungh at China when we are in a bigger dirty hand(thanks to Snowden). Besides, your credit history in US, and maybe in many developed country, already have a big impact on your loan, so why can't China has a similar system to prevent financial crime?

And again, I don't want to blame @Codrut Nistor and other people here. Just surprise how easy it is for people to be credulous, even for an experienced editor.

The Chinese people really do not have much difference from us if you happen to visit the country. Same ingenuity, same greedy, same in the human nature. My personal experience tells me that China is not a country more authoritarian than the United States, and in the sharing economy aspect much better than us. You can't imagine how CHEAP and EASY life can be with mobile pay, takeaway, sharing bikes and Didi. Fake news full of hatred from Taiwan DPP(like VOA) will just cost you the opportunity.

Slovakia

BTW When you read somewhere that someone blames somebody (great example I know) that is being paid or sponsored by Soros, go to the webpage of that individual and check his page containing Sponsors, Grants, Funds, Partners or however they call it. If you find there a company called Open Society Foundation or something like that you have a proof that this individual was, in a way, paid or sponsored by Soros. I have seen this happen many times in Slovakia and it's happening so it's not just a conspiracy. He is supporting all those things that many people blame him for...LGBTI+ support, migration support and so on.

When I say "enlighten dark nations" I am thinking about MY nation before anything else. It is not arrogant, but a sad truth instead. I am Romanian and still live in Romania. I often end up being accused as a "Sorosist" because my beliefs are opposed to those of the (non-educated, lazy, still with a lot of BAD socialist ideas stuck in their heads, intolerant religious freaks) majority.
If you think that Soros is bad and he has something against China, just try to read a bit about the state-backed organ harvesting that has been going on there lately. Even if he has some dark agenda, even if he's a reptilian that is eating babies for breakfast... the organ harvesting and the campaign against Falun Gong supporters are far worse.

It's just a pity that I come to Notebookcheck to find tech information, without politics, religion, beliefs and all of that, and then I read about how great George Soros is, because author thinks he has unfair reputation in Romania. The thing is - we're not interested into that and honestly it's just a perfect way to loose readers. We come here for technology, nothing more and nothing less. Stick to it for your own good.

Codrut Nistor

I never said he is great. His unfair reputation in Romania and other countries is often for the wrong reasons. Anyway, I'll stick to technology. P.S. This was also a tech-related article, it only involved GS as well. ;)
