The thing is this is quite normal for such a bargain! The phone is probably the best phone of 2015 if you set aside the midrange GPU (very few people actually need top of the line GPU).
Now if you look at the asking price - like OnePlus Motorola manage to offer these prices by producing as items are ordered. What is the benefit for you? Well unlike Apple, they purchase components at today's prices, they don't have to accumulate stock 8 months in advance at those higher prices!
Also they completely avoid stocking fees.
As a customer I am perfectly happy with this solution. You just need to get a bit informed about the business model of each company before you purchase from them. Motorola announce early but ship later, Apple announce late but ship as ordered.
Those are just different business models and personally I find that the Motorola one is more clever, as it allows me to get the best components at the lowest prices when Apple have to use older components and charge you a higher price.
Having said that, I can understand that if you are not aware of the business model of each company, you might be taken aback. In your present situation, it sucks that this was a present.
The phone is phenomenal! I can't believe it was so cheap and while competitor phones that cost the double can barely reach a day of battery, this thing runs for 2 straight days. It also has a great display, camera and microphone. And I love the customizable design. Believe or not, the camera is actually better than on the X Style, which has a QHD display and a higher end CPU. The bezels are also very thin compared to other 5.5" flagships. It makes the phone a joy to use every day. I also had the OnePlus 2 for comparison, and while it was also a great phone overall, the dimensions and smaller battery made me choose the X Play (I didn't need the higher end Adreno 430 GPU).
This phone is probably the best phone I have owned in a long time. The last time I have been this enthusiastic was for the HTC One M7. I was recently in Japan and it allowed me to navigate, take many pictures, videos and browse the internet in Kyoto and Tokyo during the day and still come back home with 20% battery. I never felt worried that it could run out and leave me stranded without directions! This to me, is invaluable!

Just an added word of caution. Motorola has a really poor customer service. I ordered the Play model online as a present for my wife. After 3 weeks, two missed delivery dates and two live chat sessions (initiated by me), I gave up.
Apparently, their order system is so incompetent that if they run out of supply after your order has been confirmed, it isn't automatically carried forward in their system when supply becomes available.
Despite it being a gift, Motorola couldn't even offer to prioritise the build and delivery after their own failure caused the delays. They couldn't or wouldn't even retrieve my original order.
Their response - you need to go back to square one and re-order.
Not surprisingly, I decided not to give my hard earned money to a company that treats it's customers so appallingly!
