Powerful Essentials. Dell's Latitude E5XXX series has long been an affordable alternative to the highest-end Latitude notebooks without sacrificing the essentials.  Can the E5530, with its brand-new Ivy Bridge chipset and other minor tweaks, top its predecessors?

Great review, thanks! I own the E5520 and I'm really happy with it, totally agree about the keyboard it's amazing, a really sturdy & easy to work with laptop. You can't go wrong with a Latitude.

Thanks for the great review. It was definitely worth reading each session.

Why do these models have the touchpad so off center? As a right-hander, I am constantly right-clicking when I intend to left-click. I hate it.

Can someone confirm that the E5530 can support 16GB (2x8GB).  Just purchased on from Dell with 2GB of RAM and looking to order more RAM

hi Chris,

Yes, each slot supports up to 8 GB for a total of 16 GB as stated in the review.

I was wondering about the noise. I usually work in a library and I'm concerned this may be a problem. Can adjusting the power profiles reduce the noise to an acceptable lever? If so, will it have a negative impact on the performance or will it be an acceptable one?

Great Work. I have a question. I´m thinking on buying this laptop for photography retouching work. I own the Dell U2711 27 inches with 2560x1440.
Is it possible to connect it to the monitor to get the same resolution? Maybe with a VGA to DVI cable? Or do i have to buy the Docking Station?

The specs on the Dell UK sites say this is 2.38kg or 5.25lbs rather than 2.87kg/6.4lbs quoted here. Can anyone confirm the weight? Thanks.

The Latitude E6x30 is quite popular as a mobile DAW because of its robustness and, once configured the right way, its system stability with external audio devices. Since I work with a dockingstation anyway, I have enought connections and don't need the highest robustness.

I was wondering if the E5540 has the same motherboard (of course minus some usb ports etc.), i.e. technical "layout"/features and BIOS?
That would make it a great and less expensive alternative to the E6530. Unfortunately, the review otherwise great doesn't say much about the technical difference between the E5530 and the E6530.

I I just got this laptop yesterday and I would have to disagree with your assessment of the lid.

The brushed aluminum is a nice feature, however, it does NOT resist finger prints or smudges. When I took it out of the box I touched the lid and it left a finger print. I wiped and wiped, but the print remained. Today, that finger print is still on it. I'm not sure how to remove it.

If you're OCD about how your things look, I would steer away from the brushed aluminum. At least the gloss finish can be easily wiped clean if the prints bother you.

(I have photos if anyone is interested)
