Didn't we want to transition to EV vehicles in any way (I mean "we" as in the EU)? Or did we think that we could do that only by letting others pay for that transition (all the environmental cost of rare earth extraction)? This is what happens when you don't want to see reality. There is no way that our modern world can have no impact (or negative!) on the environment. NO WAY. This is the way of the modern world.  Just have your govt and environmentalists be involved to keep a check on water underground and rivers etc checked on a regular basis.  Make the company pay for it to.  But it will bring jobs and money to your country especially if you have nothing now.  Wages are at an all time high $15 and up. The fossil fuel industry (and many other corporations) have the ability to learn. Many of the so called environmental groups and protests are funded and controlled by them. They have been doing that to block renewable energy, EVs and etc

PS the only rare earth inside an EV drivetrain is in the motors, and even that isn't necessary as AC induction motors don't use rare earth

This is NIMBY mentality. But all of the concerns can be addressed. Displacement due to surface mining. Clearing of forests. Any new mine will cause this to happen. But I am interested if the byproduct waste can be disposed safely at all. China is known to skimp on proper disposal. And there are reports that some companies are pumping waste into disused wells. But in Europe? Couldn't this be addressed with proper control?

Hate to break it to you, but European and North-American authorities do not dispose of byproduct waste either, they just ship large chunks of it to China to make the problem magically go away (from their territory anyway).
