Nuclear fusion can be achieved without powerful magnetic fields, without gold sealing, but with a highly efficient laser. An actual energy yield is reachable, with moderate technical effort.

Just to show how poor the state of the art is in laser fusion, this work started in the 1970s. I did a course on inertial confinement (as laser fusion is correctly called) in the 1980's and it was expected to see results in the early 2000s. We are still as far away as ever. Fusion is always 20 years away.

I think the problem is not technical. They say, 'bring the nuclei close enough, and fusion happens automatically'. That may be wrong. We have to force the nuclei further to cause fusion. In stars this happens, and the question of how much energy is used does not matter. But on earth, energy used is a crucial factor. To force fusion, we will require more energy than the energy released from fusion. This implies that harnessing fusion energy is just impossible.

Yes, naive humanity believed in the 1960s that in 80 years we would already be roaming the expanses of the universe, exploring other galaxies, but the reality turned out to be harsh - instead of developing education with a strict limitation on excess fertility, breeding new generations of insane beggars, humanity did exactly the opposite - it multiplied like cockroaches, producing another 5 billion mentally poor, increasingly influencing the ecology of the only planet accessible to life, lost drive in fundamental science (these +5 billion are of no use for scientific and technological progress) and thanks to ignorance and increasing development idiocracy and contempt for education (which, moreover, is deliberately promoted by the upper classes in all countries without exception, since sheep are much easier to manipulate and control than a well-educated person with a broad outlook), is increasingly losing the ability to simply support life more parts of social animals that are useless for STP, and not really intelligent and capable people. The most stupid and ignorant masses are breeding in the backward countries of the world, as well as in the "developed" ones, and the remnants of the educated strata are rapidly dying out, leaving increasingly rare islands of real science and education in the ocean of ignorance...

neural networks started in 40s
