Sony PlayStation Portal: Teardown reveals outdated Snapdragon and unnecessarily cumbersome case

The PlayStation Portal is a somewhat peculiar gaming handheld that only works in conjunction with a PlayStation 5. A teardown now makes clear that the device hardly has enough power for games other than streaming. The case without screws looks stylish, but makes repairs difficult.

Snapdragon 662 is better than I expected. If it's hackable through the USB-C charging port and goes on sale/used for $50, maybe there's something to it. I guess miniscule internal storage would be a problem, and it might have to be tethered to work as a standalone handheld.

You kidding? Snapdragon 662 is not outdated because it's still sold today. It's very capable for normal smartphone usage so streaming alone is already overkill.

Calling anything outdated just because it's not flagship is just exasperating eWaste.

Double Dipper

Outdated huh, really not hardly. Snapdragon 665 chip in my moto stylus of 2022 is a midrange beast. I payed $250 and broke even .  emulation if Wii U lower end titles are playable like Super Mario Bros and some. But definitely handles GameCube and PSP like a champ on steroids. Some of those devices that can do that sell easily over $200 alone . So getting a Phone with a 500gb of storage was a steal. Limited to Android 13 but I don't care. I buy a phone ounce every three to four years. So I know a 662 snapdragon is still nothing to sneeze at. This portal device your covering may not be a hackers dream but who's to blame for that. If you want a company like Sony to give out something nice, you gotta stop with this hack anything attitude towards their stuff.

The snapdragon 662 is horribly outdated considering they could've gone with the 680 and gotten significant battery savings. Even the Helio G99 would have been a far better choice

Snapdragon 662 is more than sufficient for 1080p cloud streaming.

I was playing Stadia on my 660 that was 2 generations older 1080p 60FPS just fine, even on a 5Ghz WiFi signal.

That processor/SoC is capable of delivering on its promises without worrying about bottlenecks in the hardware performance so I don't really see the issue.

This thing is going to flop hard.

Hmmm, sold out everywhere.

Due to scalpers not gamers rushing out to get something any phone/tablet released within the past 7 years can and does already do!

So £200 for a one trick pony or for £150 more a fully fledged hand held gaming pc aka the steamdeck that runs games natively aswell as streaming not only pc but also playstation and xbox via their streaming services not to mention a ton of emulators, you'd either have to be a complete idiot or a fanboy to believe the ps portal represents any kind of value compared to the steamdeck.

I wish someone would address the stick issues (search Reddit for "portal analog stick issue"). It's more widespread than I thought, but no official outlet has mentioned it. For such a simple device (it is nothing more than a glorified controller), the issue should have never been a thing. Instead I'm waiting since two weeks for replacement, with the risk that the new unit has the same problem, if it's a "bad batch" thing or a production problem then needs to be sorted out.

Funny, every 2nd account commenting "me too have this issue" looks like a sleeper reddit account, registration -> couple messages -> long pause -> comment on Portal.

There's probably a same issue they've had with DualSense, but competitors seem to be dumping money to make it seem more widespread than it is. Also I see money dumped on Youtube influencers for "nah Portal is not needed" narrative.

Competition wars are rough nowadays.

Do competitors care enough to pay for a bot/influencer campaign to diss Portal? I see that it's selling out, but that's probably because it's new.

For 200 dollars you are getting a well made screen, a MSRP $70 dollar controller and a decently powered device.  I honestly don't know what you would expecting.  It seemingly performs well and with solid battery life with it's biggest hangup being the interface with regards to authenticating to public wifi....something that CAN be addressed with a patch.

IMO....it's a fairly priced device.
