California and Europe are now leading the way for the phase-out of the internal combustion engine in the next decade or so. The European Parliament agreed to stop sales of new gas-powered cars and vans by 2035, including hybrids.

BTW, I wouldn't worry too much about the millions of legacy vehicles.  We bought a Toyota Highlander in 2003.  Became a total piece of rusting junk with high annual repair fees in 2021.  That vehicle only had 18 years of usage.  I'm pretty sure by 2035 most legacy vehicles will have become rusting piles of metal anyways (or becoming ones within a few years)...

How is this totalitarian? lol. Anything that bans gas powered anything to reduce emissions is a net positive on society. We can't keep pumping pollution into the air indefinitely.

People should be relieved if they're turning nuclear back on, but last time I heard they recommitted to turning nuclear off, especially Germany. France would keep nuclear around for a bit longer but won't be increasing capacity.
