Apple petitions US Government to scrap law that would let users sideload third-party apps

The US Government has drafted a bill that would force Apple to open up its devices to third-party app repositories. Apple has petitioned the Senate judiciary committee to reconsider it, citing privacy and security concerns.

Never understood why the iPhone is so popular. I know it's been said enough and people should choose what they like but this is one sad company time after time.

There are countless reasons why to criticise Apple and iDevices but let's try to explain the popularity:

- The iPhone was the first noteworthy smartphone thereby generating a user base.
- The PR is effective. This includes alleged reasons for paying too much.
- Apple has a monopoly on iOS devices.
- The whole of available softwares for iOS is said to be better than for Android.
- The average period of iOS updates is significantly longer than Android updates.
- Apple commits fewer privacy violations than Google and some of its OEMs.
- Competition by third operating systems still hardly exists.
- Apparently there is demand for expensive smartphones with above average cameras.
- Especially in the USA, iPhones are a social status symbol.
- The average used value of iPhones is larger than of Android smartphones.
- People invested in iOS software do not switch easily and the Walled Garden is an additional gatekeeper.
