If satellites and atmospheric balloons are simply too expensive to boost Internet signals across the world, Google now plans to use light beams to connect underdeveloped areas. The first country to benefit from wireless optical networks is Kenya, and the connections can reach 20 Gbps speeds, but are limited to a 20 Km radius.

Might be a nice idea, but when rainy season hits light transmission will fail.  But perhaps it's better than nothing.
