PS5 useable storage space could be problematic, while Xbox Series X offers neat workaround

The Sony PS5 versus Xbox Series X debate continues with attention turning to the available storage of the two systems. Although the PS5 ships with an 825 GB SSD, an unconfirmed report over the weekend suggests that it might only allow for 664 GB of usable storage. This compares unfavorably with the Xbox Series X.

If i remember it right, i think partial install is offered by Sony.

And data export is also offered by Sony. As in, if you don't play it that often, you could export it to external hdd.

And you move them back into SSD if you want to play it again.

The partial install solution was already confirmed on PS5 way before Microsoft confirmed it for XSX/XSS.

Actually this result of size remaining after OS is a win for PS5.

1000BG vs 825GB is a difference of 175GB.

After OS installs, they are only different by 136GB.

What this means is basically MS is using up 50GB more of your space with its OS than Sony does.

AAA games don't average 200gb, more like 70 or so.

COD is actually 2 games - Campaign + Multiplayer, and Warzone.  They are about 100GB each on disk.

Smh! So Sony having 136GB LESS space is a win for the PS5? Microsoft could occupy 50GB more (for a total of 100GB extra for the OS) and the XSX would still be ahead.  For me personally, with the ability to move games to even external platter drives for backup, most of all this is moot anyways.

How come the os inside the console is 150gb+!? Windows 10, whith all it's bloat ocupies like 20gb, and the specialized os inside consoles with lot less functions and no redundant drivers goes close to 10x bigger!?

Also games don't ocupy 200gb. Other than some exceptions like COD MW2, they are closer to the 60gb range which could decrease now that they don't need to duplicate assets to compensate for the slow HDD and can use much heavier compression.

It makes sense. First of all, except OS there needs to be space for SWAP (virtual RAM, whatever Microsoft calls it) and savegames + cache + settings +  anything else the OS or games need. There also needs to be some free space due to how SSDs work (if you fill them up they become slow, you always need free space, in fact SSDs work at full speed if at least 50% of their space is empty).

So not only does the PS5 take up LESS space than Series X, it also does NOT have proprietary SSD's.

And so far Microsoft's proprietary SSD's look filthy overpriced, comparing the 1TB SDD to Samsung's 980 Pro at roughly the same price but just blowing that Seagate out of the water.

Series X does not look that exciting in terms of storage AT ALL if you ask me.

Swap is a good point. Also reserving some space because of the SSD wear levelling and to avoid the write slowdown is a good idea (not nearly close to 50% but ok)

Didn't realize that, but I don't own any console. Anyway, one more thing additional space will be useful for is OS updates too, I guess.

Teraflops is not a good measure of performance. There are gaming PCs with less teraflops that xbox series x cant even compare to.
