Even if it offered actual variable focal length, it would still exist in a different universe. Variable focal length isn't what distinguishes DSLRs. I can use a DSLR with a fixed focal length (prime) objective just fine. Primes are very popular as they offer superior optical performance and a single prime can make for a compact package. No, the advantage lies completely elsewhere.
